New documentary series preserves personal stories highlighting the people, places and experiences that continue shaping Broward County
GREATER FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (June 19, 2026) – In recognition of Juneteenth, Visit Lauderdale today launched Black in Broward, a five-part documentary series created to preserve and share the personal stories of residents whose experiences reflect the history, culture and evolution of Greater Fort Lauderdale.
Inspired by a desire to document stories that are often passed down through generations but not always formally preserved, Black in Broward captures firsthand accounts from local voices whose experiences reflect the heritage, entrepreneurship, arts, family traditions and African American and Caribbean influences that have helped shape the destination.
The series features on-camera interviews with local historians and cultural advocates, including Tennile Brown, Adrienne Clark, Emmanuel George, Kitty Oliver and Cynthia Strachan. Their stories explore Broward County's rich cultural heritage through personal reflections, historical perspectives and community experiences, including stories highlighting the legacy of educator and civil rights pioneer Blanche Ely.
“Great destinations are defined not only by beautiful places and memorable experiences, but by the people and stories that create a true sense of belonging,” said Stacy Ritter, president and CEO of Visit Lauderdale. “Black in Broward gives us an opportunity to celebrate the voices of our community, preserve important stories and invite residents and visitors to better understand the people who helped shape Greater Fort Lauderdale.”
Developed through thoughtful conversations with community storytellers, the series highlights individuals who share their personal connections to Broward—from memories of neighborhoods and cultural traditions to reflections on progress, resilience and community pride.
“Black in Broward began with a simple belief—that every person carries a piece of our community’s history,” said Neki Mohan, vice president of business development & community engagement for Visit Lauderdale. “These stories are about preserving memories, celebrating contributions and ensuring future generations understand the people and cultures that helped shape Broward County.”
As part of the series launch, Visit Lauderdale will host Black in Broward: Stories That Shape Us, a special screening and community conversation at the African American Research Library and Cultural Center later this summer.
As travelers increasingly seek authentic cultural experiences, Black in Broward helps showcase the history, traditions and diverse voices that contribute to Greater Fort Lauderdale's sense of place.
