Greater Fort Lauderdale itself is a work of art, from the ebb and flow of the Atlantic Ocean to the calm River of Grass to the west. Public art is also an adornment to the community, with towns and cities proudly displaying larger-than-life murals that can be enjoyed by residents and visitors alike.

To celebrate Broward County’s centennial, artists were commissioned to create murals in every county’s commission districts and Port Everglades. Dubbed the VisualEYES project, the works can be found in places like the Old Davie Historical Museum in Davie, Artists Alley in Pompano Beach and the Amman Building in Port Everglades

Here are some other impressive murals to look for in Greater Fort Lauderdale, each with its own unique story and message for everyone under the sun.

Fort Lauderdale

Everyone Under the Sun Mural

Blink, and you might miss a new mural going up in Fort Lauderdale. One of the newest additions is the “Love” mural by Cey Adams on the exterior wall of Hof’s on Las Olas Boulevard, inspired by Philadelphia’s “LOVE” statue. The mural joins another one completed by Lori Pratico, a tribute to the busy thoroughfare using iconic Florida imagery in a cursive font. Old meets new with Visit Lauderdale’s “Under the Sun” mural by Avi Ram, painted on the side of the historic Riverside Hotel.

The newly crowned Stanley Cup champions, the Florida Panthers, are the subject of a mural by Carlos Solano, just south of Peter Feldman Park on Northeast Third Avenue. A nod to both the team and the endangered animal is depicted in a mural by Carrie Bennett on the underpass of the Riverwalk garage.

The exterior of Sistrunk MarketPlace is also wrapped in larger-than-life murals by local artists, including Rosanna Kalis with her large-scale, Asian-inspired works; Orla Ananda’s flowing line work; Diane Portwood’s mixed-media signage; and another piece by Pratico.

Hollywood

Hollywood Art Walk MuralThe Downtown Hollywood ArtWalk takes place on the third Saturday of each month, with a mural tour starting at 6 p.m. Guides will share the stories and backgrounds of the 36 wall murals and 10 sidewalk murals that enliven the city. The public art pieces are a collection of works by local, national and even internationally renowned artists, including Hoxxoh, Susana Vergara, Squiggle Daddy, TM Sisters, Yuhmi Collective, Jen Little, Claudine Julien, and more. While the murals are scattered throughout the downtown corridor, the sidewalk murals are along Tyler Street.

Wilton Manors

Wilton Collective MuralThe “Island City” welcomes visitors with a burst of color, thanks to the Rainbow Bridge as one enters Wilton Manors. Covered in a swatch of R.O.Y.G.B.I.V., the message “love is love” is adorned over the bridge, reminding everyone that everyone under the sun is welcome in this famously LGBTQ-friendly community. But that's just the beginning. Wilton Manors is complete with vibrant murals throughout the area. “Readers” by Mark Vose is a fitting mural for Richard C. Sullivan Public Library, and various businesses around town sport a layer of customized artwork, such as the graphic “Dog” outside of Wilton's Manor Doggie Daycare, Resort and Spa.

To take on the scavenger hunt of Wilton Manors public art, pick up an In Plain Sight brochure at Wilton Manors City Hall, the Hagen Park Community Center, Richard C. Sullivan Public Library, as well as various art galleries, shops, and guest houses.

Pompano Beach

Pompano Beach Pier Parking Garage Mural

The burgeoning beach city is home to a dozen (and counting!) public art murals. In the downtown area, Artists’ Alley is a growing collection of works by local artists, including “Old Town Mural” by Carlos Inocente Gonzalez and the word collage “World Peace Mural” by Renda Writer. Nearby at the Bailey Contemporary Arts is “Legacy Mural,” a work by Andrew Reid SHEd celebrating the arts’ center’s centennial.

By the beach, the exterior of the Fisher Family Pier parking garage is covered in marine life depictions, “ A Place I'd Rather Be” by artist duo Mike and Donna-Lee Savlen and “Reef Life” by Taylor Smith, AKA DREAMWEAVER.
